Section 4 Justice Estate

This section gives details of naming conventions to be used to refer to elements in the Justice Estate, such as Prisons and Courts.

4.1 Prisons

A full list of prison codes and names in held on the Gov.uk Prison Estate Register. A csv of these names and codes can be downloaded here.

4.1.1 Variable names

The Gov.uk Prison Estate Register csv contains a full list of prison codes and names. These should be used in any dataset containing information on prisons. However, the variable names used in the Gov.uk Register should be changed before being included in MoJ statistical datasets.

All datasets with information on prisons should include the variable prison_code at least. The inclusion of prison_name is also recommended.
